How do I choose the hair thickness? Fine vs Thin vs Thick differences.

July 22, 2021

One question that plagues many people is whether I should buy thinner or thicker hair extensions. Today we will talk about the difference between thin and thick hair extensions, and which one should I buy.

First of all, if you want to know the thickness of your hair and get more knowledge about hair extensions, please refer to our detailed guide on buying hair extensions. It is very detailed and includes information about textures, colors, attachment types, etc.

As for others, here is a summary version that can help you. It is also important to check the cheat sheet at the end of the article.

1. The difference between thick and thin hair extensions

The thickness of the hair is determined by the weight (in grams) and length of the hair extension. The thinner the hair, the lighter it is, and vice versa.

Thin hair extensions increase the length

If you just want to increase the overall length of your hairstyle, then thinner (lighter) hair extensions will do. Lightweight hair extensions weigh less than 100 grams.

This is usually the cheapest option and may not give you the results you want. Unless your hair is particularly good. Only very few women have beautiful hair. If you are not sure, please select the next option.

Medium thickness hair extensions add length & volume

The second option is somewhere in between. If you want to increase hair volume slightly and have a healthier appearance, consider hair weighing 100 – 130 grams.

These are medium thickness extensions suitable for most women. Medium-thick hair is also the easiest to blend.

Thick hair extensions make you perfect

On the other hand, if you want a big hairstyle that looks like those shampoo ads, choose thick extensions. This extension is the most expensive, weighing in the 200 grams range.

Some women want to be cautious about the extra layer of hair on their heads. The others just went all the way in, with the most intense look. If your budget allows, go for it!

2. Hair extensions thickness and weight cheat sheet

We are not ready to let you go. Before ordering delivery, you must also know a few other things.

What if there is no weight information?  Some hairdressers use grams per share instead of total weight. For example: 26 inch extension cord (1g/s). what does that mean? This means that each chain weighs one gram. To know the thickness of the hair, just compare the number of grams per share to the total number of shares (usually 50 or 100).

Don't forget to hair coverage. Remember that thinner hair will not cover the head like thicker hair. In most cases, fine hair is used to add some extra color to the overall hairstyle or to cover damaged hair.

Don't forget the shape of the hair. After you understand the difference between thick and thin hair extensions, you may only choose thick hair and finish work. However, although weight describes the thickness of the hair, it does not recognize the shape. Do you want your hair to have a V shape (thin at the end) or flat on the back? For the second option, you need to choose double drawn hair when purchasing.

It is actually the ratio of weight to length. We considered 20-inch or 50-cm extensions when writing the guide. Obviously, assuming they are roughly the same weight, a 10-inch hair extension will be thicker than a 30-inch hair. Other lengths and weights can be deduced by analogy.

Conclusion

All in all, most women should get a hair extension weighing at least 100 grams. This will not only change your appearance, but it will be done on a medium budget, which will not only increase the overall length, but also increase the volume. Only buy slender hair extensions if you have very thin hair or want to add some brightly colored strands to your styling. Thick hair extensions are suitable for women who don't care about price and want the best.
